European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) Chooses Orbit’s Satellite-Tracking Ground Station System

Orbit’s Gaia 100, customized with an S/X dual-band 3.7-meter antenna, to be integrated into the ground terminal of ESOC’s Special Mission Infrastructure Lab Environment

Netanya, Israel, September 5, 2017 – Orbit Communications Systems Ltd. (TASE: ORBI) announced today that its Gaia 100 satellite-tracking ground station system, customized with an S/X dual-band 3.7-meter antenna, will be integrated into the ground terminal of ESOC’s Special Mission Infrastructure Lab Environment (SMILE).

ESOC’s SMILE facility, which hosts several projects, missions and systems, is a laboratory for prototype testing and validation of operations concepts and technologies. Orbit’s Gaia 100 will provide the facility’s ground terminal with enhanced satellite-tracking capabilities.

“Orbit’s Gaia 100 was the only antenna capable of meeting our specs and also fitting on our roof,” said Piermario Besso, Head of the Antenna and Infrastructure Section of ESOC’s Ground Systems Engineering Department. “The combination of compact size, light weight and field-proven technology made it the logical choice for us.”

“We are proud to be associated with the European Space Agency,” added Eitan Livneh, CEO of Orbit. “Their studies in the realm of human and robotic space travel bring great value to all of mankind.”

About ESOC

The Germany-based European Space Operations Center (ESOC) serves as the main mission control center for the European Space Agency (ESA). ESOC’s primary function is the operation of unmanned spacecraft on behalf of ESA and the Launch and Early Orbit Phases (LEOP) of ESA, and third-party, missions. It is responsible for a wide range of operations-related activities, including ground systems engineering, software development, flight dynamics and navigation, development of mission control tools and techniques and space debris studies.

About Orbit’s Gaia 100

Orbit’s Gaia 100 is a cost-effective, high-performance ground station system capable of capturing data from NGSO satellites. With 2.4m, 3.7m and 4.5m antenna configurations, Gaia 100 supports S, X and L bands, in multiple combinations, and simultaneous or switchable RHCP and LHCP polarization. It comes equipped with a ruggedized radome designed to withstand the harshest environmental conditions.
